What's Inside? A Car or a Man Cave?

Storage buildings are my business, so it will come as no surprise to you that I admire garages with creative designs. It can be a garage owned by an individual or a parking garage used by hundreds of people every day. Some of them are just downright impressive! There are people out there who know how to make a garage look so incredible that you forget it was built to house a vehicle! This week's blog takes a look at some garages that will make you shake your head in amazement.

17 Custom Garages That Deserve a Double Take

  1. A Garage Transformed into an Office-This simple garage has been turned into a studio/office with overhead lighting, a concrete table and modern cabinets. Note the traditional garage door redone with plates of glass. This allows plenty of natural light to enter the office.
  2. A Garage Turned Lounge-Looking at these photos you may not believe the space was once a garage. The sliding overhead door gives it away! Brightly colored pictures on the walls, a modern sofa, chairs and even throw pillows work together to make this space an inviting place to relax.
  3. A Parking Garage to Remember-Located in Miami, this parking garage (also known as a 'parking sculpture') houses 300 cars. The natural light flows into this parking sculpture allowing people to enjoy a fabulous view of the city.
  4. The Kre House-This structure in Tokyo has the capacity to store nine cars. There is an interior elevator that lifts a car and deposits it into the living room!
  5. Marina City-This is a spiral parking garage in Chicago with a famous history. It was featured in a car chase scene in the 1979 movie, The Hunter starring Steve McQueen.
  6. "The Community Bookshelf"-This parking garage for the Kansas City Public Library features 22 gigantic book spines each measuring 25 feet in height.
  7. Jazzing Up a Garage-A plain garage has been turned into a brightly-colored workshop. Huge blue and white tiles on the floor and plenty of storage cabinets make it both decorative and practical.
  8. An Italian Garage-A homeowner has transformed his one car garage into a private getaway complete with palm plants. With a few comfortable chairs, lamps and coffee table this practical structure has become a relaxing area for friends and family.
  9. A Utilitarian Garage Turned into a Beautiful Space-Check out the before and after photos of a detached garage. A completely enclosed storage structure is opened up to let in natural light and serve as an airy studio/office.
  10. Coastal Retreat-This garage has become a peaceful living space featuring a collection of soft colors, stylish furniture and even skylights. The only clue as to the room's former identity is the familiar garage door and its horizontal track near the ceiling.
  11. Ballet Valet Parking Garage-This is a beautifully disguised parking garage in Miami Beach. The green, lush vegetation on the sides of the structure help to set it apart from the familiar concrete façade of most parking garages.
  12. Santa Monica Civic Center Parking Garage-This is one of the most colorful parking garages you'll ever see. It is environmentally-friendly complete with solar panels and plenty of natural light allowed to flow into the structure.
  13. A Hideaway in the Garage-From the outside it looks like an appealing place to store a car. The inside is cozily furnished and carpeted. The owner added a wall of windows and even a television.
  14. Michigan Theater-How about parking your car in a garage with cathedral ceilings? The Michigan Theater, built in 1926, went out of business in the 1970s. Now, it's a parking garage where drivers can stop to enjoy the gilded walls and ambience of this building. I never thought a parking garage could also be a historical site.
  15. Chesapeake Car Park Two-Located in Oklahoma City, this work of art also serves as a parking garage. The outside of the garage has a layer of wire mesh around it that reflects the light so its appearance changes throughout the day.
  16. Veranda Car Park-I would say the perfect word to describe this parking garage's design would be sleek. It has mirrored glass walls and is made of aluminum as well as steel. The natural light that pours in allows people to park their cars in a pleasant setting.
  17. A Garage Becomes a Living Area-This small garage has been transformed into a living area complete with sliding glass windows, wood floors and lots of natural light flowing in.

It's inspiring what both professional architects and your neighbors can do with a basic structure designed for practical uses. Thanks for reading! Alan

Custom Garages from Alan's Factory Outlet

Posted by Alan Bernau Jr on Fri, Feb 22, 2013

Alan's Factory Outlet has several different types of custom garages to choose from.

The first kind of garage we will talk about are the custom metal garages which are built on site and come in 3 different roof line styles and many different widths and length.  You get to make the sidewalls the height you want along with picking which garage door size will work to fit everything you plan on storing inside the garage.

When you order your metal garage you can add a 36" walk in door and windows.  These doors and windows can be placed wherever you want them.  Here are some of the options and prices for the metal garages.  Keep in mind you can order by phone or you can buy the metal garages online.

The standard 1 and 2 car garages usually range from a 12' wide to 24' wide and the length start out 21' long and get longer in 5' increments up to 41' long and longer custom size garages are available.  If you go with a 41' or longer metal building it is strongly recommended that you go with the vertical metal garage which is made with the roof panels going up and down.  The reason for this is because the longest panel is 36' long so if you go longer than than and you get a boxed eave metal garage which looks just like the vertical except the roof panels run the length of the building or a regular style metal garage which has rounded sides this will create leaking issues and a weak spot in the garage that can be more prone to collapsing if a heavy snow is on the roof.  36' and under and all 3 custom garages would work fine.

The steel buildings can be custom made up to 40' wide and as long as you need them.  Here is a custom steel building made for warehouse storage.

The steel garages can be made taller to store a rv motor home with leg heights up to 12' tall legs on the 12' wide steel buildings and the 18' and wider structures can be made with up to 14' tall legs.  The tallest garage door we have is a 12x12 size garage door.  You will want to measure how tall your rv is at the peak height to make sure that size garage door will fit your rv.  Other options would be for us to frame out an opening if you need to get a custom larger size garage door after we install the building or a third popular option is to get one of the custom metal carports and just have the carport protect it from most of the rain, ice, snow and the sun.  You can partially enclose it for a little extra protection from the sun and weather by adding a 3' panel on both sides and maybe a gable in the back end.  You can put a gable in the front end but one thing to remember is if for example you have 12' legs carport a front gable will come across at the 12' height so as long as you don't have anything taller than 12' this will work.

The metal custom garages are delivered and installed for free in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

The metal buildings do not have a floor so we recommend either a gravel or concrete foundation.

Another category of custom prefab garages at Alan's Factory Outlet are the Amish built garages.  They are made in wood, vinyl and board batten siding.  They are delivered fully assembled to your location as long are you are located in Virginia and West Virginia as these are the only two states that the Amish custom built garages are delivered.  These garages can be made with or without a floor.

On the vinyl and wood custom garages you can go with a 1 car garage or a 2 car garage.  A single level or a 2 story garage are other options.  The two story custom garages are made with a stair case going up to a second level with 8' headroom on the first and second floor.

So as you can see there are many different types of custom garages to meet many different types of situations you are trying to solve and protect from the weather or theft.

If you could dream up a custom garage what would it look like?

Custom Built Sheds, Modular Garages and Metal Carports

At Alan's Factory Outlet we have a custom made storage sheds and modular garages made in wood, vinyl and board batten siding which are delivered fully assembled.  We also have metal garages and metal carports which are built on site.

custom built sheds garages carports

All of the sheds, garages and carports are built in the color and style you want.

  • You get to choose the location for the doors and windows since they are custom built the way you want them.
  • We can make the sheds and garages with extra windows or no windows.
  • Add an extra entry door is not a problem.
  • Design your structure with the main color, trim color and roof color to match your home.
  • The Amish custom built sheds and garages can be made with or without a floor and can be turned into a garage, 2 car garage or 2 story garage.

So the steps in deciding how you want to configure the storage building or garage can be done many ways.

A methodical way would as follows

  1. Figure out the total square footage you need in the form of a size width and length?
  2. Decide on which type of siding you want?
  3. Research the different styles in the size your looking for?
  4. Visualize or sketch out how you want the doors and windows placed?  On the wood, vinyl and board batten Amish custom made sheds and garage please keep in mind this will be in relation to how the shed or garage is loaded on the trailer since they delivered fully assembled we want to make sure everything is located on the correct side once we slide the building off of the trailer.  Custom metal garages and carports are delivered as a kit and built on site so everything is more from the prospective of how you would be walking up to the front of the structure on them.
  5. Colors is usually the finishing touches you would want to decide on to really set your building apart and make it match the surroundings.
  6. You can add extra options such as a pressure treated ramp, loft, work benches, extra ventilation like a ridge vent, wider or taller doors or a reinforced floor.

Since you have so many options there should be a kind of building that will meet your needs.

One thing that gives you some peace of mind is we have many video tours, pictures and a display lot so you can walk through them and see first hand how they will be constructed so there will be no surprises to the level of quality craftsmanship in each of the custom built sheds, garages and carports.

One thing that all of the buildings require is a level area so the doors and windows function properly.  You have several foundations you may want to put down depending on how you will be using the structure.  You could put down a level gravel base, concrete pad or if you have an existing asphalt foundation that works fine.

Another kind of barn are the custom built horse barns which are made in board and batten siding for the horses.  They come in 2 different style of either a stall horse barn or a horse run in shed with a framed out opening to be used as a horse shelter.

A few other of the custom made products at Alan's Factory Outlet are gazebo kits and pergola kits.  The gazebos and pergolas are delivered nationwide in the USA.

The Amish built sheds and garages are delivered in Virginia and West Virginia.

The metal buildings to include the carports and steel garages are delivered and installed for free in 27 different states.
